Bibles for the poor

Poor top

Objective

To make Bibles available free of charge in a responsible manner to those who are unable to afford it.

Background
  • Approximately 55,5% South Africans live in poverty.
  • The food poverty line is R585 per persoon per maand. This refers to the amount of money that an individual will need in order to afford the minimum required daily energy intake.
  • The median wage in South Africa is R3 300. It supports 3,5 people (R930 per person or R30 per person per day).
  • The unemployment rate rose to 32.5 in the fourth quarter of 2020, the highest unemployment rate since quarterly figures made available since 2008.
  • The Bible brings hope, but many people cannot afford a Bible of their own. On a daily basis requests pour into our Bible Houses from people who would love to receive a Bible of their own or from churches that would like to help the poor.
  • A strategy is in place to ensure that the Bible reaches the right people.
  • Thanks to this project, 26 597 people who were unable to afford a Bible of their own, received one in 2020.

Expected impact
  • The Bible is placed in the hands of people who desperately need it, but who are unable to afford it.
  • The power of the Living Word will bring comfort and hope to people who sometimes feel that they have been rejected and forgotten by society.
